Novel Broadband Optical Single Sideband Transmission with Advanced Fiber Bragg Grating Filter

Abstract


A Stanford researcher developed patented broadband optical single sideband (OSSB) transmission system based on a fiber Bragg (FBG) grating filter. This filter technology could enable extremely high bandwidth communication systems on an optical backbone. With delay modulation, the signal spectrum is shaped such that OSSB signal with sideband suppression of about 20 dB is possible with optical filtering. The FBG at the transmitter end also compensates for the chromatic dispersion of the optical fiber link.

  • Optical communications with phase encoding and optical filtering.

Advantages


  • FBG not only suppress the sideband but can also compensate for chromatic dispersion of the link.
  • The higher data rate, the better sideband suppression ratio will be.
