Diagnosis of CML and other leukemias using beta-catenin biomarker

Stanford Reference:

02-179

Abstract

The tightly regulated balance between cell death and proliferation is essential for tissues to function normally. Loss of the balance between apoptosis and the ability of progenitor and stem cells to self-renew results in cancer. Beta-Catenin is a pivotal player in the signaling pathways mediating several developmental processes and has been found to increase stem cell proliferation when mutated. The presence of abnormal Beta-Catenin can be used to diagnose and characterize hematopoietic tumors that use this developmental pathway and be useful in identifying self-renewing cancer stem cells.

Applications

  • Characterize and diagnose hematopoietic tumors
  • Identify, isolate and enrich stem cells of interest for research - cell populations with sequence inserts of Beta-Catenin can be screened for an expressed marker linked to the protein
