4D intensity modulated radiation treatment planning for respiratory motion compensated treatments

Abstract


Modern advancements in computing technology are enabling computer tomography (CT) and Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment (IMRT) to undertake more complex imaging and treatment issues related to organ movement. Stanford researchers have developed a patented treatment-planning algorithm for dynamic multileaf collimator (MLC) tumor tracking delivery. The method is based on four-dimensional CT that is dosimetrically robust to respiratory movement as compared to a three-dimensional optimal scheme (see Stanford Docket S06-198). Unlike the gated IMRT or motion inclusive IMRT methods, this method is suitable for continuous beam-target alignment during radiation treatment delivery. Although research to optimize the 4D IMRT planning algorithm is ongoing, this pre-optimized method possesses immediate utility for clinical application since it is deliverable with currently available planning technology.
