Bearing and Brake Mechanism

Abstract


Researchers at Stanford have invented a new class of mechanical bearing mechanisms that can be used to connect or join two or more bodies and selectively provide relative mobility or immobility between the bodies. A central component in the current mechanism is the “magnetic bearing and brake” (MB&B) element. This MB&B joint can be used in various ways to create linkages whose joints can be locked and unlocked at will via a pedal or hand switch or other convenient means. These joints can be made quite small (or large) and exhibit little or no jitter or backlash when switching between bearing and break modes.

Applications


  • Positioning and manipulation of medical devices - can be used to position and/or manipulate imaging, therapeutic and other instruments at desired locations in a patient’s body, with applications ranging from otologic, ophthalmic, to neurological, to orthopedic and more

Advantages


  • Freedom of movement - provides one or more relative degrees of freedom of motion between connected bodies
  • Low friction - extremely low friction, which is primarily viscous in nature
  • Versatility - the bearings may be selectively locked or unlocked to create a controlled rigid connection between the two bodies
