Improved Flameholding in Jet Engine Augmentors

Abstract


Stanford engineers have designed a flame augmentor that improves both flame stability and engine performance. Flame stability is crucial to the performance of the thrust augmentors which provide jet engines with additional thrust capability. This technology combines certain two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional modifications to the base region of a generic streamline shaped flame augmentor. This stabilizes the flame in the base region thereby enhancing overall flame stability. This improved flame stability was confirmed both by liftoff height measurements in a vitiated coflow and blowout limit measurements in a hybrid of fully premixed/partially premixed flame configuration.

Stage of Research
Testing is completed for methane fuel. The inventors planned similar research with higher carbon number fuels, e.g. propane, to extrapolate the current results to more realistic liquid fuels.
