Eye-glasses Mounted Display

Abstract


Stanford researchers have designed a compact, personalized, image projection system which allows for an immersive, augmented reality experience. This invention, “Glasses Mounted Display (GMD), consists of eye glasses, beam combiner implemented by an holographic grating, projection optics, a display device such as a liquid crystal display device and illumination optics and light source. It is the minimum implementation of conventional Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) which are much bulkier and more expensive. Applications include cell phones, enhanced medical information display, and reading/viewing aid devices.

Applications


  • Cell phones: Display information such as incoming call, text message, and navigation data (GPS) via cell phone
  • Enhanced medical display during operations (e.g. display location of vessels during insertion of needle for anesthesia)
  • Reading Aid Device (RAD) for people having aged eyes: Camera grabs an image of the book user is currently reading. Character recognition software extracts text information (or if the title of the book is known, text data is retrieved from data base or via internet).
  • Viewing Aid Device (VAD) for people having aged eyes: Camera grabs an image of scenery user is currently viewing. Image grabbed by camera is super imposed on the scenery of viewer.
  • Other potential applications: video gaming, 3-D entertainment experience
