Novel combination therapy for improved management of opioid overdose

Researchers at Stanford have developed a combination therapeutic approach for the management of opioid overdose that addresses key limitations of current standard-of-care interventions.

Opioid overdose remains a major public health challenge, with opioid-induced respiratory depression representing the primary cause of mortality. Although opioid antagonists such as naloxone effectively reverse overdose, their use may be associated with precipitated withdrawal, limited duration of action, and recurrent respiratory depression following treatment. There remains a need for therapeutic strategies that provide effective overdose reversal while improving tolerability and extending protection.

This technology comprises a novel combination therapy designed to reverse opioid-induced respiratory depression while addressing important limitations of existing treatments. Early preclinical studies have demonstrated encouraging efficacy, tolerability, and durability of protection in animal models. The technology has the potential to improve the treatment of opioid overdose across community and institutional healthcare settings.
