Docket #: S09-107
Protein and Gene Biomarkers for Rejection of Organ Transplants
Researchers in Prof. Minnie Sarwal's laboratory have discovered a panel of urine protein biomarkers to diagnose acute rejection in patients with kidney transplants. Acute rejection of kidney grafts remains a significant problem in transplantation community. It is currently diagnosed by biopsy which is invasive and associate with complications. This technology could provide a safe alternative for monitoring patients.
Ongoing Research
The inventors are using ELISA assays to validate these biomarkers on an independent set of patients.
Applications
- Diagnostic - to monitor acute rejection in kidney transplants
Advantages
- Non-invasive - urine profiling is safer and causes less pain and discomfort than the current invasive biopsy
- Allows for frequent monitoring to better assess patient status and adjust immunosuppressive therapy accordingly
