Look-ahead Ultrasonic Imaging Catheter

Abstract


Stanford researchers have created a simple forward-viewing ultrasound catheter. This technology consists of two components, one or more transducers and an ultrasound mirror that directs ultrasound waves forward of the catheter. The design of this intravascular catheter permits the ability to evaluate blockages without disruption and to guide the recanalization of complete occlusions, both of which are more difficult in a side-facing catheter. While this invention is intended for cardiovascular applications, it can be applied to other medical areas in which ultrasound imaging is utilized.
