Polysurf: An Interactive Software System for Fitting a Network of Nurbs Surfaces and Associated Displacement Maps to Dense Polygonal (3-Dimensional) Meshes

Abstract


Stanford inventors have designed software which allows 3D graphics professionals to extract shape and surface-texture information from virtually any source of 3D data, including point clouds, polygons, and NURBS. This software has been licensed by top animation and entertainment companies and has been used in awarding winning motion pictures.

Figure description: Moving from left to right in the image, we start with the raw, dense polygonal model (leftmost) which in this case came from 75 scans of an action figure. It has over 350,000 polygons. We first paint boundary lines on this model. This is shown in the figure that is second from the left. We use this information to automatically grid (see paper) each patch. Here is a close-up shot of an intermediate stage of this gridding. The third figure from the left shows a split view. The left half is a set of spline approximations for the relevant patches and some associated displacement maps. The right half shows the polygonal model. The rightmost figure shows a split view with the left half being the displacement mapped spline patches, the right half once again being the polygonal model.

  • Algorithms and practical tools for converting dense polygonal meshes to smooth surfaces have applications in a number of fields including but not limited to:
    • Motion pictures, animation, and other entertainment applications
    • Industrial design
    • Manufacturing

Advantages


  • Input polygonal patches have no topological or shape constraints other than that they are u-v parameterizable
  • Control vertex resolution of the B-spline surface is chosen by the user
  • User should have precise control over the fidelity with which various regions of the mesh should be captured in the B-spline surface
  • Combination of B-spline surface and displacement map need only approximate the mesh surface, rather than interpolate the mesh vertices
  • Mesh connectivity should be used to assist the surface fitting process
