Cockeyed Implementation of Hadamard Transform Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

Abstract


Researchers in Prof. Richard Zare’s laboratory have developed Hadamard Transform Time-of-Flight Mass Spcetrometry (HT-TOFMS) for ion detection with a 100% duty cycle over a wide range of masses. This patented “cockeyed implementation” of the HT-TOFMS is a method to determine ion distribution even when the flight path of the altered (such as with a Bradbury-Nielson gate, "BNG") as opposed to flying in a straight line. The overall performance of the HT-TOFMS is improved with a BNG because in an “on” state many or all of the ions strike the detector and in an “off” state many or all of the ions miss the detector. Compared to traditional TOFMS, HT-TOFMS produces mass spectra with increased signal-to-noise properties, permits greater detection sensitivity, or enables faster spectral acquisition.
