Abstract


Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) is a popular tool for detecting biologically-based assays. However, the sensitivity of current assays is limited by the number of elemental atoms that can be attached to each detection reagent. Stanford researchers have developed a method for increasing the number of these atoms by 10-100 fold, and thus increasing the sensitivity of the assays by the same factor.

Applications


  • Diagnostics -- analysis of cells, cell components, blood, drug screens and drug metabolism

Advantages


  • No background fluorescence or background conversion
  • Potentially more than 100 non-biological elemental isotopic masses available between 80 and 250 atomic mass units (amu)
  • Simultaneous measurement with virtually no overlap
